In what could be considered the most widespread coverage of the online casino
and internet betting industry, the CBS television programme, 60 Minutes,
reported on the state of online gambling in the U.S. Compiled of several
interviews with both anti and pro-online casino supporters, the television spot
takes a deep look at the size and reach of the online casino, sports gambling
and online poker industry.Interviews were conducted with Senator Jon Kyl,
who adamantly opposes online gambling, and has made it a focus of his
congressional affairs to put a defining cap on just how the government will
handle online casinos and those citizens who are caught gambling there. In
other words, Kyl has been trying for several years to pass legislation that
would specifically make online casino and gambling sites illegal in the U.S., as
well as spell out legal repercussions that the government could take.
Other interviews were conducted also, such as
the one with SportingBet CEO Nigel Payne. Payne did a wonderful job at
portraying a credible and professional gaming industry, as well as why it was
important to regulate it in the U.S. According to Payne, the online casino
industry is so huge and explosive, that if the U.S. does not regulate it,
problem gambling is bound to grow out of control. If the government simply
makes it illegal, that is not going to stop U.S. players from going online.
However, if the government assumes responsibility and puts proper regulation
controls into place, problem gambling will be kept to a minimum.
